Codename: Loop

Its a fan-made Half-Life game that plays like a top down shooter. Its supposed to have randomly generated levels and play like a roguelike, but it only features one level (Questionable Ethics) and ability to load your own levels you can make in Hammer.

Fallout Shelter

Its a free-to-play management game, in which you manage your own Vault and vault dwellers.

Freedoom

Its a free and open-source Doom clone that supports every sourceport, even the original release of Doom. Its basically a reskin of Doom with custom levels, and since the code of Doom has been released officially by id Software, its completely legal.

Lugaru

Its a free and open-source beat-em-up with anthropomorphic rabbits (and wolves), which is also pretty challenging. Used to be sold commercially, but is free since 2016 (the HD version is not however).

Marathon

Despite the name, its an old FPS that was sold commercially for Mac. Not anymore, now its free and cross-platform for everyone to play, even on your phone.

OpenArena

Its a free Quake 3 Arena clone, which is a fast-paced multiplayer arena shooter. It exists for the same reason Freedoom does, the original game became open-source, so devs could switch assets and make their own maps.

Its a free and open-source implementation of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, which is a railroad management game.

Red Eclipse

Another free multiplayer arena shooter, this time its an its own product, since its not based on anything.

Slayer's Testaments

Its a standalone Doom 2016/Eternal (which is a boomer shooter) demake in Quake engine, which is surprisingly finished. Not every level was ported faithfully for obvious reasons, but it exists and you can play the custom maps or Quake levels with it.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Anomaly

Its a standalone addon for Call of Chernobyl, which is a mod for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat. Not the greatest way to get known to the series, but hey, its free! If you really want to try out the series in its purest form, buy Call of Pripyat first, then see if its your thing. Or not, if you just came for a "free survival game"

Its a standalone co-op mod for Half-Life, which means that you don't have to own Half-Life to play it in co-op, though with the caveats, since the weapons has been redone. However, its not the best way to play the original game, nor it supports Half-Life mods. But Sven Co-op itself moddable and has a bunch of custom maps to play in.

The Dark Mod

Its a Thief-inspired standalone mod for Doom 3. Other than the engine, it has nothing common with Doom 3, since it plays exactly like Thief: The Dark Project. It has all the factions and monsters from the originals, remade and renamed in copyright-free way. Unfortunately, there are no ports of Thief levels.

Unreal

Its a classic first-person shooter with smart enemies (smart in the way that they can avoid your attacks) and banger soundtrack. It used to be sold commercially, until suddenly Epic Games removed it from digital stores. Thankfully, after enough backlash, Epic Games allowed players to download the game for free from Internet Archive and update it with OldUnreal's patch

Unreal Tournament

Its a multiplayer arena shooter with cheesy taunts and a banger soundtrack. It used to be sold commercially, until suddenly Epic Games removed it from digital stores. Thankfully, after enough backlash, Epic Games allowed players to download the game for free from Internet Archive and update it with OldUnreal's patch
