It was the first (and, in my opinion, the only good) Ukrainian post-punk band founded in Elbląg, Poland, by Marek Folusevych and Bohdan Petrukha, two Ukrainians who had already played in various bands and did not want to play by the rules established by the Ukrainian musical diaspora (which was quite conservative at the time), but wanted to play something unique and outlandish that would break all the rules, something like British post-punk.
They needed a vocalist, so they invited Olga Nakonechna (who is Ukrainian but has a strong Polish accent. Her brother Volodymyr was also a co-founder of Koka Records, which released the band's music). All set, but they needed someone who could write lyrics in Ukrainian, so they looked through their contacts and found Bohdan Huk.
When the band formed in 1985, they played a concert at the Ukrainian diaspora fair in Gdańsk, but neither the audience nor the diaspora liked their music (most likely due to audience's traditional views) and kicked them out, which meant that they also lost their rehearsal room.
Their new rehearsal room became the basement of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and they played in Polish underground clubs for two years. After that, they broke up because the founders emigrated back to Ukraine (or were deported, some sources give a different context).
The Ukrainian wiki also states that they were the first post-Soviet post-punk band, but this is not true, as bands such as Kino already existed at that time (some may consider it not a post-punk band, but Russian rock, so I don't know). In addition, at that time, Poland was still part of the collapsing Soviet Union.
Huge shoutout to Fahrenheit for uploading the entire tape to YouTube, as well as to the people at Wikipedia for doing the research and writing an article about the band.
[1986-1987] Оселедець (Herring)This is a catalog of various concert recordings and the band's only album known to the public. It was released only on cassette, and the cover of the cassette reads: “Attention! The recording quality is bad. Documentary recordings of the non-existent ensemble ”Herring“, which was born and died in Poland.” I like almost all of the songs.
