Videogames

I'll be blunt, I'm not exactly a cinema geek. I haven't seen that many movies.

Dune (1984)

In my opinion, David Lynch's Dune is one of the most underrated movies I have seen. Sadly, it was butchered by being cut and limiting Lynch's creative freedom. I haven't read the original novel, so I can't tell whether the movie is accurate, but I pretty much liked the movie.

I didn't find the plot that much hard to follow, I could more or less tell what was going on. Visuals are spectacular, costumes looked great, so did the miniatures and practical effects. Soundtrack by Toto and Brian Eno is great, its main theme might as well be one of my favorites.

I didn't watch the original Theatrical cut that was trimmed, but the fan-made Spicediver cut, which stitches together Extended Edition, Theatrical Cut and deleted scenes together, making the movie more coherent than it originally was.

Sure, it doesn't fix cheesy Harkonnens (still prefer them over Villeneuve's Harkonnens), overreacted lines or a pug that is just there, since thats as far as fanedit can get, but the movie stays memorable and I really enjoyed it.

Fun fact: if there was no Dune, there would be no Command & Conquer either, since it owns its existence to Dune II.

Scary Movie

I'm not really an avid fan of horror movies and I won't be able to point out all cliches and tropes these movies do, but I have enjoyed Scary Movie and tropes it made fun of.

Its a comedy and it seems apparent that the movie doesn't take itself seriously, which works in favor of the movie. Characters feel like stereotypical teenagers from horror movies, if they didn't gave a fuck (until they're about to die for real) and the movie makes fun of that too.

My only issue with Scary Movie is that not every joke has aged well. Poorly aged sex jokes aside, I think its a nice movie for what it is.

Ring

One of the infamous ripoffs horror remakes. I didn't like it. It falls for a couple of horror cliches that makes my eye roll in annoyment like jumpscares, scary for the sake of being scary and color filter.

It also removes some elements that make the story less interesting IMO, like the occultism. Its complete removal made me ask more question than when I watched the original movie. Or death tape being an actual clue for investigation and not just foreshadowing for jumpscares.

Johnny Guitar

Yes, its not just a meme song from Fallout: New Vegas, but also a Western movie from 1950s about two women feuding, because one accused another for working with gangsters, robbing and killing. And yes, the title is misleading too. Titular character isn't as important as the actual protagonist of the movie.

Its a fine movie, the entire orchestral soundtrack has a motif of the movie in it (which is the same song that plays in Fallout: New Vegas), acting was more or less good, characters and story were okay. There's nothing I can say about this movie really, its just fine.

Kill Bill

Say what you will about Quentin Tarantino, but this movie was pretty good as a martial arts movie. While this revenge story was slightly confusing for lack of context and soundtrack just fit the atmosphere at best, characters were pretty memorable and fighting scenes were awesome.

Fun fact: the band singing "Woo Hoo" in the movie is an actual all-female garage rockabilly band called The 5.6.7.8's. They mostly sing in English with Japanese accent.

The Matrix

Probably one of my favorite action movies for a few reasons. Its stylish as fuck with those leather trenchcoats, movie's story is easy to follow and understand, action scenes are awesome and soundtrack is pretty good. Can't say much about actors, they did their roles well. Unrelated, but I kinda prefer Keanu Reeves with short hair tbh.

Fun fact: Whether intentionally or not, the movie can be interpreted as a trans allegory.

The Matrix: Reloaded

Same thing as original movie, just twice as better (though I'd say that a few scenes in Zion were unnecessary), the story has slightly more going to it than in a first movie, which I appreciate. Soundtrack by Don Davis and Juno Reactor is a banger and action scenes are way more spectacular in Reloaded, especially a highway chase.

Ghost in the Shell (1995)

I am so disappointed in modern anime, because its all such a fan-service slop with barely disguised fetishes, meanwhile in the 90s there were some good stuff, especially a masterpiece like Ghost in the Shell.

It has a good gritty artstyle, has some action and its more serious story (at least compared to source material) is not afraid to give some food for thoughts about AI and consciousness (I think I know where Ion Storm took inspiration from for Deus Ex. Also its not an excuse to praise IRL AI, its not even intelligent). Voice acting was good in both Japanese original and English dub (surprisingly). Soundtrack is very atmospheric and that intro still gives me shivers, its so good.

Fun fact: Mamoru Oshii's film is completely derailed from the original manga, as its more serious, less horny and lacks comedy

Blade Runner (1984)

Blade Runner is the most gorgeous film from the 1980s I have seen so far. Its loosely based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, a dystopian post-apocalyptic cyberpunk story about a special police unit hunting down runaway replicants, artificial humans made as slaves for off-world colonies, and questioning if he is human himself.

When I say its gorgeous, I mean it. Skyscrapers and blimps full of ads, neon signs, night, rain and lots of people on streets, its just so atmospheric. Movies' synth soundtrack composed by Vangelis only captures the vibes.

I personally enjoyed the story, while protagonist is far from a likeable character, he's shown to be afraid of replicants he's hunting, showing his human nature. I have no issues with a cast and their acting, its really great. However, the movie suffers from poor audio quality and there's nothing you can do about it, unfortunately.

One more thing with Blade Runner is that it has a bunch of different versions. I've seen Theatrical and Final Cuts. Theatrical was fine for what it was, but Final Cut is almost the definitive one for me, not only it remasters the looks of the movie, it also includes some deleted scenes. I said almost, since it includes a weird blue tint that wasn't in the original

Blade Runner 2049

I was kinda disappointed after seeing that movie. Its a sloppy legacy sequel.

Environments mostly look sterile (in a post-apocalyptic LA of 2049, especially when Blackout happened previously. Yeah, looks nothing like world has ended), protagonist is empty (and so are at least half of characters that figure in the story), antagonist is an uninteresting delusional messiah and other is his pawn, music is anything but Blade Runner (not to disregard Hanz Zimmer, but he is not the man for that job), visual exposition was poor and the whole story didn't click with me whatsoever (liked the idea, but the execution was bland as fuck).

I can only praise the practical effects though, they looked pretty nice. I'd rather replay Westwood's Blade Runner game, at least that one was made by someone who truly cared about the original film.

If you really insist on watching or rewatching BR2049, try Blade Runner 2049: New Vangelis Cut, it trims some scenes a bit and replaces the soundtrack with Vangelis' score.

American Psycho

I have watched it a bit way earlier before sigma meme stopped being funny. Anyway, its not a movie for everyone for various reasons, but I enjoyed it.

I kinda like the ending that js open for interpretation, music choice was nice and it has memorable moments (I'm sure y'all have seen Hip to be Square or business card scene, its really good). None of the characters, except for protagonist, is memorable (but their deaths are) and thats actually the point, because the movie is also a satire on rich people

Fun fact: this film was directed by a woman and protagonist was supposed to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm glad she went with Christian Bale though, his performance was great

Drive (2011)

Another movie not for everyone, mostly because its a slow-burn about a stuntsman at day, driver for gang members at night, so there isn't much action as some would expect. Its focused more on main character doing his job and drama elements.

Story is fine, so are the actors, music and overall visuals. IMO Drive is overrated for what it is.

Fun fact: this movie is actually based on a book of the same name and it even has a sequel called Driven.
